Moving Forward

Jim did a trial run at the Rosener day program earlier this week and was deemed a good candidate. They also referred to him as high functioning -- face splat. In case I had illusions about how bad it would get.

Meanwhile, there are no fewer than 12 forms to complete and sign. Executed the most difficult one yesterday with Jim's physician. And the TB test, the results of which should be back Tuesday.

Transportation to and fro is available ... yes, more forms and an interview process.

Jim, when asked, was not positive about the program. He thinks there are too many old people there. Which at his 75 makes sense. I don't think he will balk at attending twice weekly. He usually comes along peacefully. Meanwhile, I am head over heels ecstatic about this.

It will take another week or so to process the forms and paperwork. Then, we have a week-long respite at Rancho Valencia (https://www.ranchovalencia.com/) near San Diego at the end of the month, so Jim will not enter the program until the first or second week of October.

The daily cost (which includes breakfast coffee and pastries as well as hot lunch) is only $94 dollars including transportation which seems miraculously reasonable. $800 per month. We have long-term care insurance but it is capped at 5 years so I won't invoke it until later years when the care cost will be much higher.

There is a support program for care providers. I may dip a toe therein.

I begin to feel as if I am competent and moving forward. The last year was nightmarish.

  1. I, for one, am optimistic. It's a turning point, and there will be bumps, but then it will be the new normal.

  2. It's really good to have other eyes, as well as other bodies, involved in this process. Having someone else (professionals, even) able to see how he's faring on a regular basis will help your POV, I promise. And more hands on deck is always better when caretaking, for both of you.
